In the first installment of “Science Spotlight”, we’ll be covering a study published in the American Journal of Hypertension, which found that omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce blood pressure.

 

According to the Center for Disease Control, roughly 70 million Americans adults have high blood pressure, which is about one in every three adults.  High blood pressure increases the risk of dangerous health conditions like heart attack, stroke, chronic heart failure, and kidney disease.

 

A recent meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Hypertension showed that regularly consuming omega-3 fatty acids may reduce blood pressure. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were analyzed in 70 trials to determine their effect on blood pressure.  Compared with the placebo group, results showed a 1.52 mm Hg (millimeter of mercury) reduction in systolic blood pressure and a 0.99 mm Hg reduction in diastolic blood pressure for the group consuming EPA and DHA fatty acids.

 

EPA and DHA had the strongest effect in subjects with untreated hypertension. A 4.51 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure and a 3.05 mm Hg reduction in diastolic blood pressure were found in untreated hypertensive individuals.

 

Overall, these results show that omega-3 fatty acids may play a role in reducing and controlling blood pressure, and this is one of hundreds of studies that supports the role that omega fatty acid intake plays in optimal health.
